Sylla returns as he continues injury recovery

Hemel Storm are pleased to confirm Hakeem Sylla will continue his recovery from injury as part of Tom Baker’s squad for the upcoming British Championship Basketball campaign. 

It marks the 6’8” centre’s fifth season in Hertfordshire, having signed from Thames Valley Cavaliers in 2022. 

He most recently took to the court at the beginning of the last campaign, but after a second period of rehabilitation in as many years he’s back and determined to contribute with ball in hand. 

“After a long road back from injury, I’m fully cleared and ready to lock in for the new season with the squad,” Sylla said. 

“A special shoutout and massive thank you to the entire club - the chairman (Tony Humphrey), management, the staff, coaches, physios, and my teammates for standing by me, supporting my rehab, and having my back throughout the entire recovery process. I couldn't have done it without you.

“Now it’s time to put in the work and make this year count. 

“Let’s get it!” 

The Guinean international helped the team to an unprecedented, unbeaten campaign in his first year in Hemel, picking up four trophies and a place in the NBL Division One Team of the Season along the way, and looked set to snatch the MVP title the following season.

However, an ACL injury picked up against Derby Trailblazers ended his season early, eventually returning to the court the following February having remained in and around the squad as Storm secured the 2023/24 Playoff title. 

He showed glimpses of the value he offers as he stepped up his recovery in the following months, before a knee injury at the beginning of last season halted him in his tracks. 

When fit, Sylla offers genuine height, athleticism and a presence on both ends of the floor, known as the ‘double-double king’ for his ability to consistently rack up double-digits in points and rebounds. 

His character also plays a major role in the locker room, often encouraging his teammates and celebrating their success with a customary swing of the towel.

“Having him around the programme is important to us, both for what he brings as a player and the experience and connection he has with Storm.
