MATCH REPORT: Frome Town 2-0 Wimborne Town

The beautiful game is back – but not at Badgers Hill on Saturday where this opening fixture was a hard watch. Frome, playing to their physical strengths, marked their return to Step 3 by taking all three points with a goal in each half from Archie Ferris. Wimborne created more chances but were denied either by the ‘flying’ Kyle Phillips (Frome’s man-of-the-match) or by narrowly missing the target.

Without Owen Roundell-Prince and Ben Scorey, for the second season running manager Tim Sills had to make a late change to his defence with Billy Walker making his first start for the 2026-27 campaign in place of the ill Harvey Wright. Kai Crampton was in goal on his return for a second loan from AFCB. There were only four on the bench.

The Magpies started brightly. In the first minute Josh McQuoid picked up a loose ball in midfield, playing Lewis Williams into space through the inside-right channel, but his pass was just too far ahead of Will Fletcher; then Williams cut in from the left touch-line to fire low and hard towards the near post but was inches wide; before, on 12 minutes, Josh Carmichael set-up Charlie Wooding for a shot from the edge of the box which again went agonisingly close to opening the scoring.

Frome were dangerous from set-pieces all afternoon, and just before the mid-point of the half a low in-swinging free kick from the right of the area was flicked over the bar as the cavalry charged towards the near post. As the hosts pressured with high intensity all over the pitch they forced the visitors into mistakes and free-kicks. On the half-hour mark a cleverly worked free-kick just outside the penalty area on the right saw Ferris in space at the far post but he couldn’t get his volley on target. The Robins repeated the move from another free-kick eight minutes later, but with a different result - this time the tall centre-forward headed across ‘keeper Kai Crampton for the ball to nestle just inside the far post.

Before the goal, Wimborne had created chances too. Max Bustamante retrieved an over-hit corner to lift a cross into the danger area when Sam Roberts volleyed over. And on thirty-five minutes Fletcher, for once, evaded his grappling markers to reach Williams' free-kick only for Phillips to make a brilliant reaction save from his close-range header to tip the ball over the bar.

The visitors made a bright start to the second-half too. Carmichael and Wooding combined well down the right before, on the left, Cam Sullivan’s dangerous low cross was hacked away as Fletcher closed in. On forty-nine minutes Sullivan’s clever feet saw him create space through the inside-right channel before unleashing a fierce drive from 20 yards which was brilliantly turned round the post by the diving Phillips. Just before the hour-mark Bustamante’s cross from wide on the right was met at the far post by McQuoid only for his header to fly inches wide of the post with the keeper beaten.

But The Robins continued to threaten as they attacked towards their massed support. On sixty-seven minutes a surging run down the right by Hopkins was illegally stopped by Tyler Edmondson on the edge of the box on the right; the subsequent free-kick was held by Crampton at a nice height. But three minutes later the hosts doubled their advantage; a long high clearance into Wimborne’s half caused a mix-up between Roberts and his keeper for Ferris to say “thank you very much” as he rolled the ball into the unguarded net from an acute angle.

Wimborne had a couple more opportunities: first Joe Smith’s goal-bound shot was deflected for a corner before Wooding chanced his leg from distance but well over. After four additional minutes, The Robins and their supporters celebrated the victory.

Frome played to their physical strengths, and were very good and effective at doing so. Their back four hardly missed a header, while behind them ‘keeper Phillips was in fine form. Badgers Hill, with its quirky sloping pitch, is likely to be a fortress for them again this season. Wimborne created good opportunities, and will have been disappointed not to take any of them.
