Hemel Storm are pleased to confirm the re-signing of point-guard Sam Newman, who will make it seven seasons at the club.

Newman has agreed a fresh two-year deal which will see him remain in Hemel until 2028.

The playmaker dominated the assist charts in the inaugural British Championship Basketball campaign, claiming 289 across the season, nearly 100 more than anyone else, at an average of 11.6 per game.

He brings continuity and control at the top of the floor, dictating the tempo of the game while possessing the ability to score from both inside and outside the three-point arc himself.

On his return, Newman said: “I’m happy to be back again, for my seventh season!

“I’m running out of things to say in these but a few things run true each time: Storm have the best people, the best fans and the best team, so it’s a bit of a no-brainer at the end of the day.

“I know it’s been a busy summer behind closed doors for Tom Baker (Head Coach), Jon Burnell (Director of Men’s Basketball) and Tony Humphrey (Chairman), so I'm excited to put it all together and get back to where Storm deserves to be.

“See you all soon.”

Newman has amassed six trophies in his time at the club, including a quadruple in an unbeaten 2022/23 season.

He was named MVP in our playoff final win the following campaign.

His two-year contract provides great stability, in a move not widely seen elsewhere in the league.

He’ll be working with Baker for the duration of that spell, after he was announced as the club’s Head Coach and Club Programme Development Lead on a similar deal earlier this week.

On Newman, Baker said: “Sam is a really important piece for us.

“He gives us composure, leadership and a strong understanding of how we want to play.

“He can control the game, create for others and set the tone for the group as a league-leading facilitator who excels in areas that will help take us back to the top.

“We are really pleased to have him back.”

Newman is the first of our player signings for what promises to be a hugely exciting 2026/27 campaign. With plenty more exciting news lined up for you soon, make sure you follow us on social media (@hemelstorm) so you don’t miss a thing!
