Match Preview - Prescot Cables

Leek Town FC | 04 April 2026 | Copy link

The Blues secured their third consecutive win on Monday, beating Stocksbridge Park Steels 2-0, making us one of the in-form side in the division. The poor surface led to a scrappy game, however, Campbell was able to open the scoring on 26 minutes following a crowded corner, making it 1-0 to Leek heading into half time. Almost immediately after the break, Campbell turned in his second goal of the day, following some great play from Alex Hurst.

Leek controlled the remainder of the match, with Stocksbridge only managing to force one save from Dino Visser all game. The Blues had shouts for a penalty and could’ve added a third, yet the full-time whistle arrived and Josh Brehaut’s men walked away as 2-0 victors and confirmed competitors in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division next season. The match also marked Dino Visser’s 10th league clean sheet in the league.

Prescot Cables

How are they doing?

The Cables sit in 20th place, one point above Stocksbridge Park Steels, whom we played most recently. They are a side desperately fighting for safety, being 4 points deep in the drop zone. With three matches left, relegation could be all but confirmed for them following our match if results don’t go their way. A last glance at their performances over the season shows that the side have both 15 losses and draws and are still in single figures for wins, having earnt 7 so far heading into these final three games.

Prescot haven’t been able to claim a win in 12 matches, dating all the way back to January, where they beat Warrington Rylands 3-0. Since then, The Cables have drawn 5 and lost 6 heading into this fixture, however we all know that no opposition can be taken for granted and the Blues need to approach this in a professional manner.

Their Main Man?

Their top scorer, Ben Elliot, left at the end of December and currently, their new top scorer is Jack Goodwin, a 24-year-old English midfielder who has found the back of the net 6 times so far this season. He joined Prescot Cables in 2024 following the club’s promotion. This came after a short spell with Marine AFC, where he began his career and made a handful of appearances in the National League North before moving on to The Cables for more consistent first-team opportunities.

Their Gaffer?

Steven Daley took over as Prescot Cables manager in February 2023, following the departure of Kevin Lynch. His appointment was widely backed internally, with the club’s board describing him as a “brilliant coach and man manager” and the ideal choice to lead the team forward. From the outset, his role was about stabilising the club and maintaining competitiveness in a tough non-league environment.

One of the defining periods of Daley’s tenure came during the 2023–24 season, where he guided Prescot Cables to a 3rd-place finish and promotion via the play-offs. Their return to the Northern Premier League Premier Division after a long absence was a major achievement and highlighted his ability to organise a side capable of competing at the top end of Step 4 and stepping up a level.

His time at the club hasn’t been without drama. In July 2024, Daley briefly stepped down as manager, only to be reappointed just days later, showing both the club’s trust in him and his importance to the project. Since returning, he has remained at the helm, and continues to lead the team; however, that may be on course to change if the club cannot get to safety.

Prescot Cables – have we met before?

The Blues and The Cables have played 33 times since the 1980s, with the first of those fixtures being played in late 1980, where Leek were defeated 4-1, Steve Goodwin scored the only goal for the Blues. Leek have won 18 of the 33 matches between the two sides, while drawing 7 and losing 8. Most recently, we drew 1-1 away from home at the start of the season, with Liam Edwards being the only scorer. Over the 33 games, there have been 88 goals (55 for Leek), meaning there’s an average of just over 2.5 goals a game!
