Goals from Sime and Fassnidge see City leave Yorkshire with a valuable three points.
City went into Sunday’s FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands clash at the Home of Football knowing they could put pressure on the hosts, Sheffield FC as the race for fifth place nears its conclusion.
In the blistering Yorkshire wind and rain, the game started with City in the ascendency straight from the off, after Charlotte Poole put in a cross into the box that just drifted by the woodwork.
Five minutes later, Maia Clark had an effort, but her edge of the box strike was comfortably saved by the keeper.
Carys Lowley blocked a goal bound effort as the hosts threatened to open the scoring and moments later Kaye Haggett had a dig from the right hand side of the box, her effort had the keeper beaten but the ball bounced off the post and stayed out.
City were outstanding and just before the 25 minute mark got their rewards when Annie Sime pounced and buried the ball home after a on a loose ball into the box after the hosts failed to clear their lines from a City corner.
City’s tails were up and moments later looked the add their second after Clark played a ball to Poole who broke the offside trap, she got back onto her right foot and wriggled away from the defender but her effort was saved by the keeper.
Just on the half hour mark, Jodie Whiteman made a routine stop as Sheffield looked to get back on level terms.
The hosts equalised on the stroke of half time against the run of play after the ball bobbled in the area.
Five minutes into the second half, Clark spreaded a delicious ball to Poole who was bearing down on goal, but unfortunately her effort was held.
Moments later, Sheffield had a glorious opportunity to go ahead, but the striker scuffed her effort wide.
On the hour, Clark was fouled at the edge of the box and Worcester were rewarded with a direct free kick right on the edge of the penalty area.
Captain Jess Fassnidge stepped over the free kick and made no mistake in helping City restore their lead.
With just over fifteen minutes remaining, City had two chances to extend their lead, first, when Connie Matthews thought why not and had a shot from distance, but her effort went wide of the right hand post and then Evie Bilingsley had an effort after the ball bounced kindly for her, but the keeper palmed the ball out for a City corner.
Ten minutes from time, Sheffield tried their luck from edge of the box, but the ball went over the bar.
In stoppage time Lowley had the ball in the net, after Matthews whipped in a deadly cross into the box, and Lowley was there at the back stick to prod home, however the officials spotted a hand ball and the goal was ruled out.
The result means City leapfrogged today’s opponents into fifth position with just two league games remaining for Worcester, as City reach the final stretch of the 2025/2025 season.
Next up is the final home game of the season, as City welcome Northampton Town to Sixways on Sunday, 12th April with a usual kick-off time of 14:00pm.
WCWFC U18s
City U18s welcome Stourbridge U18s to Little Perdiswell on Saturday morning, hoping to bounce back from the 2-0 defeat on the road against Kidderminster Harriers last time out.
City were fantastic as they despatched the Glass Girls 4-1, thanks to an own goal, a brace from Rosie R and a strike from Ava saw Worcester gain the three points.
Next up for the U18s is a home fixture at Little Perdiswell against Boldmere St Michaels U18s on Saturday, 18th April, with a scheduled kick-off of 10:30am.
WCWFC Reserves
City Reserves faced a trip to the Valley Stadium to take on Redditch United on Sunday afternoon where the two sides played out a 0-0 draw.
Next up for the Reserves is an away trip to Long Itchington as they lock horns in league action, on Sunday, 12th April, with a scheduled kick-off of 14:00pm.
