Match Report | Peterborough United 7-2 WCWFC
Defeat on the road on International Women’s Day
Over a thousand supporters attended the Weston Homes Stadium on International Women’s Day as City faced off against 2nd place Peterborough United in FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands action.
It was the hosts who took the lead after two minutes, when City failed to deal with a corner and the ball was prodded in at the back post.
Five minutes later, Jodie Whiteman makes her first save of the match following a shot from distance and just after Whiteman was on hand again and crawled the ball away as Posh looked to double their lead.
Just before the 20th minute Posh did double their lead, after an audacious effort from the edge of the box looped in.
Four minutes later Peterborough found themselves 3-0 up after it somehow ended up over the line despite the best efforts from the City defence.
City immediately got back into the game as Maia Clark continued her fine form after rounding the keeper and placing into the empty net.
Two minutes later, midfielder Nyah Edwards had a shot from the edge of the box, but her effort went over the bar and moments later Charlotte Poole had an effort saved.
Despite Whiteman’s best effort including a fantastic save as she pushed the shot away for a corner, City conceded another two goals to go into the break 5-1 down.
Two minutes into the second half, Posh hit a shot that flashed just wide of Whiteman’s post as they pushed for a sixth.
Fassnidge had an effort from the edge of the box, but her shot was comfortably held by the goalkeeper and just two minutes later, City were awarded a free-kick, and Annie Sime hit one from the right-hand side and goodness me, what a strike.
Whiteman made an outstanding save as she pushed the ball out for a corner, but from the resulting corner, Posh added their sixth of the afternoon with a header.
With fifteen minutes left to play, Whiteman needed to get down to her right and tip the ball behind.
Five minutes before the end, Posh hit the bar after an effort that nearly looped in. The hosts added their 7th a minute from time.
Next up for City is a local derby against Kidderminster Harriers at Sixways in the semi-finals of the Women’s Sunday Cup, with a usual kick-off of 14:00pm.
