Wimborne Town shared the points with Yate Town after a 1-1 draw at the South West Interiors Stadium on Saturday, with Ajani Burchall striking early before the hosts equalised 13 minutes from time in the second half.

Manager Tim Sills made three changes to the win at home to Taunton; with Oscar Abbotson, Drew Eccott-Young and Tyler Edmondson coming into the side, and Alex Borges returning to the bench.

The Magpies started on the front-foot and found the lead just five minutes in following a long throw from Owen Roundell that was headed on and dropped to Burchall, who hooked a shot with his left boot into the ground, bouncing up and into the back of the net.

After the goal, there were chances for both sides, with Abbotson making a good save to deny the hosts before Williams saw his shot from distance fly wide.

The winger then had a great opportunity two minutes later after finding space to break into the box, hitting a shot low to Aaron Sainsbury’s right and having to be tipped well round the post for a corner.

Tyler Edmondson was then called into action up the other end of the pitch, heading a cross from the Yate winger out for a corner.

In the 26th minute, Cam Munn was fed in on an overlapping run before crossing to Burchall, he pulled the ball back into the danger area but it was cleared away. Moments later, Will Fletcher found some time on the ball in the box before slamming an effort well over the bar.

Looking intently for a second, a great passing team move from Wimborne ended with Burchall getting past a defender in the box and pulling it back, with the Yate defender neutralising the threat and clearing behind for a corner. Another chance came the visitors way after a corner delivery was punched away by the Yate stopper and fell into the path of Roundell, who fired towards goal, but the shot was deflected over.

The final real chance of the half came the way of Munn who, after a deep Carmichael free-kick was headed down by Fletcher, volleyed a strong effort at goal that had to be saved well by Sainsbury.

Wimborne carried momentum into the second 45 after the trio of Burchall, Williams and Carmichael linked up well in attack before Carmichael’s resulting shot was blocked just in time.

Yate responded with a chance of their own, a floated corner delivery was headed goalwards and Abbotson made a brilliant save to claw the ball out of the top corner and deny the hosts.

On 60 minutes, Williams was slotted in through on goal by Burchall, but was beaten to the ball by the keeper who smothered to safety. Max Bustamante was brought onto the pitch for Williams as the visitors continued to seek a second and crucial goal. Munn had his second big chance of the game in the 66th minute, as he hit a powerful strike from distance that was claimed by Sainsbury.

Wimborne would be made to rue their missed chances as 11 minutes later, the Bluebells found an equalising goal after a counter attack wasn’t cleared from the Magpies and Alex Monks found the bottom left-hand-corner from the edge of the box.

Despite the setback, the visitors responded with more chances towards the Yate goal. Bustamante’s shot was kept out after beating his man in the box and Fletcher found the back of the net, only to be denied by the assistant’s offside flag.

Josh McQuoid, who had been brought on for Carmichael earlier in the half, was forced off through injury and replaced by Alex Borges, who returned after a loan spell at Bashley FC. With seven minutes added on at the end, Wimborne applied pressure on the hosts’ defence but were not repaid for their efforts and the score ended level despite a positive performance. A big thank you to all our supporters who travelled in numbers and made the journey to Yate.

Next up for Wimborne is a Tuesday night trip to Plymouth Parkway, a game that has previously been postponed twice, but a chance to get back to winning ways away from home.
