MATCH PREVIEW: Wimborne Town vs Taunton Town

Wimborne Town FC | 02 March 2026 | Copy link
We waited twenty-eight weeks to play Taunton this season, and then just six days later The Magpies face The Peacocks for a second time.

Last Wednesday at Wordsworth Drive, Max Bustamante gave Tim’s team the perfect start by scoring after twenty-three seconds. However, two in three minutes by Jack Rice-Lethaby and Owen Brain near the end of the first-half gave the hosts the advantage, which they maintained to the end. Late on, the visitors were reduced to nine men following a second yellow for Sam Roberts, and a straight red for Billy Walker (on his 100th appearance) – they’ll both be available on Tuesday but will miss the match at Yate on Saturday.

Last Saturday Gary Johnson’s men lost 4-2 on 5th-placed Sholing’s 3G, with Ben Seymour and Dylan Jones scoring for The Peacocks. That keeps Taunton in the danger zone with a W8 D6 L16 GF 46 GA 58 record; on their travels it’s W4 D1 L11. In the current form (last six games) table, The Peacocks are 18th with a W1 D2 L3 record.

In that same table, The Magpies are third from bottom above Basingstoke and Tiverton after three defeats in eight days – 5-0 at Gloucester, 2-1 at Taunton, and, on Saturday 2-1 at home to Dorchester in the Dorset derby in front of a cracking crowd of 1143, when Wimborne once again dominated the attacking stats but were unable to find the net other than Billy Walker’s penalty. But in the table that matters, Tim’s team remain 12th with a W9 D10 L10 GF 42 GA 40 record; at the Wyatt Homes Stadium it’s W7 D6 L2. That includes a 3-0 win two weeks ago over Hanwell who are top of that current form table.

Last season Wimborne won this corresponding fixture 3-0 with a Matty Burrows brace, and one from Will Fletcher.

Into the final two months of the season, distinct groupings of teams are clear: Walton & Hersham look likely champions; Gloucester, Poole, and Farnham looking likely for the play-offs; there’s now a six-point gap between the top half (11 clubs), and the rest with Tiverton adrift at the bottom. That leaves ten teams battling to not be amongst the other three teams who’ll be relegated. With Wimborne and Taunton both in that last group, this is a match neither team will want to lose.

We know our boys will do all they can to turn round our recent run of poor form. It’s up to us to give them all the encouragement and support we can. So put on an extra layer or two and come on down to The Wyatt Homes Stadium where there’s always a special atmosphere under the lights, and cheer the boys on. After all, it’s what Tuesday evenings were made for.
