MATCH PREVIEW: Taunton Town vs Wimborne Town
For the third time we are scheduled to go west on Wednesday to face Taunton. After all the recent heavy rainfall, the ground staff at Wordsworth Drive did a remarkable job to get the pitch playable last Saturday for the visit of Hungerford, so maybe, just maybe the fixture can finally be played.
Taunton have had six games since Christmas under new boss Gary Johnson: winning 2-1 at home to Gloucester – and after Saturday we know just how good a result that was; losing 2-1 at Tiverton; drawing 2-2 at home to Havant & Waterlooville; losing 3-1 at Gosport; losing 3-2 at Berkhamsted; and, on Saturday, drawing 2-2 at home with Hungerford when Alfie Moulden equalised in the 98th minute to send the Somerset team’s supporters home happy. Those results, and a number of recent postponements, means that The Peacocks have slipped into the relegation zone with a W7 D6 L15 GF 42 GA 53 record; at Wordsworth Drive it’s W3 D5 L5. With Johnson at the helm, expectations are high that The Peacocks will soon climb away from the drop zone. In the current form (last six games) table Taunton are 19th.
In that same table Wimborne sit 18th. The Magpies last six results are: Weymouth (a) 1-1; Basingstoke (h) 1-1; Hungerford (h) 1-1; Evesham (a) lost 2-1; Hanwell (h) won 3-0; and, on Saturday, Gloucester (a) lost 5-0. Who is top of the form table after Saturday’s fixtures? Hanwell.
In the table that matters, Wimborne are 12th with a W9 D10 L8 GF 40 GA 36 record; on their travels it’s W2 D4 L7.
Johnson’s most recent signing is Dylan Jones, a wing-back from Gloucester, who set-up that dramatic late equaliser on Saturday. Ben Seymour has signed permanently from Torquay, while club captain Nick Grimes is returning from injury.
In this equivalent fixture last season, The Peacocks equalised in the 99th minute after goals by Toby Holmes and Will Fletcher seemed to be setting The Magpies on course for a unique league double, having won 3-0 at New Cuthbury. That’s the only point The Magpies have taken from four Premier South visits to Wordsworth Drive. In eight Division One visits, we drew three and lost five. So a Southern League win in Somerset is long overdue. And we know how much Tim Sills’ teams like breaking records.
After Saturday’s defeat at Gloucester, Tim will be looking for a reaction from his players, while Taunton will want to get something from the game to keep in touch with the clubs just above them. Matches between the two teams are always competitive and full of good football, and this one has all the makings of being a cracker.
Although there’s not a lot of rain in the weather forecast, do check the club’s website for a potential pitch inspection or postponement before travelling. And remember that the game is on Wednesday.
