A quick-fire Halifax double sees City exit the FA Women’s National League Plate

On Sunday, City welcomed tier 3 side Halifax to Sixways in the FA Women’s National League Plate First Round, hoping to progress in the competition and to continue their excellent form over the last couple of weeks, winning back-to-back matches against Stanground Cardea in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup and Notts County in the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands.

It was the visitors who had the first chance of the game, but Player Of The Match Jodie Whiteman held on to the ball.

Three minutes later, in the ninth minute, Whiteman was forced into a great save down to her right after the Halifax forward cut inside to have a shot.

In the 18th minute, Halifax had an opportunity as they neatly made an opening; however, the shot went over the bar.

Ten minutes later, the visitors hit the crossbar following a thunderous effort from distance, and on the stroke of half-time, Halifax hit the crossbar again after City keeper Whiteman saved with her feet, but the ball crashed off the bar.

Although City didn’t create any chances in the first half, it was a footballing masterclass in how to play off the ball with a little bit of luck thrown in to go into the break goalless.

Just after the break, Halifax hit the woodwork again after a looping effort came off the bar.

Ten minutes into the half, Jenn Higgs found space in the box and had a shot from a tight angle, which forced the Halifax keeper into a great save.

A few moments later, City took the lead after the ball broke to Nyah Edwards, who slotted the ball home to score her first City goal.

Just after the hour mark, City were let off the hook after the attacker pressed Whiteman, and the ball bounced off the attacker and went just wide of the post.

In the 70th minute, the visitors had a golden chance to equalise after a ball was played across the Worcester box, but the attacker fired over the bar with the goal gaping.

It was a quickfire double for the visitors, the first one a strike into the bottom right, and the second saw the attacker round Whiteman and put the ball into the empty net.

Lorna Watson came on in stoppage time to make her home City debut following her substitution at Cheltenham in the group phase.

Halifax managed the game out to progress to round two of the FA Women’s National League Plate, but despite the defeat, City can be pleased with how they played against higher opposition.

Next up, City are in Adobe Women’s FA Cup First Round proper action as they travel to Emerys Stadium to take on tier five side Port Vale on Sunday, 26th October.
