City fall short at Sixways after a resolute Leafield display

City came into today’s contest with Leafield on the back of their first win of the season, after a Jess Fassnidge goal in the 38th minute was enough to secure the three points against Sutton Coldfield Town.

It was the visitors who had the first opportunity of the game, but Jodie Whiteman comfortably saved the shot.

Just after the 15th minute mark, it was City who had their first attempt of the contest, after Jessica Fassnidge played in winger Kaye Haggett, but the keeper held her shot.

Three minutes later, it was the visitors who took the lead after a ball was played into their striker, who made no mistake in putting the ball into the top corner, leaving Whiteman with no chance.

Evie Billingsley tried her luck from distance in the 20th minute; however, the keeper was equal to it as City looked to get back in the game.

Ten minutes later, Leafield had an opportunity to double their lead, but Whiteman saved down to her left.

In the 36th minute, Billingsley had an effort from distance, but the keeper did well to tip it over the bar. Billingsley stepped up to take the resulting corner and nearly squeezed the ball into the net.

It took ten minutes into the second half for the first attempt as Leafield’s left winger drove into the box and had a shot, but no problem for Whiteman.

In the 66th minute, it was an almost immediate impact from game changers Keeley Crew and Laila Rich. Crew had an effort that dinked the keeper, the ball fell to Rich, whose effort was cleared off the line.

Just after the 70th minute mark, a superb reactive save from Whiteman after the ball bounced off City defender Nyah Edwards.

Three minutes from time, Crew cut inside and tried to bend one in the top corner, but her effort went over the bar.

Next up, it’s derby day as we welcome Kidderminster Harriers to Sixways in the FA Women’s National League Cup next Sunday, 7th August, with a kick-off time of 14:00 pm.
