Brilliant City battle their way to their first three points of the season at Sixways.

City welcomed Sutton Coldfield to Sixways on Sunday afternoon, looking to bounce back after two successive defeats to Barnsley and Cheltenham Town, respectively.

In the opening ten minutes of the game, it was City in the ascendancy, but neither keeper was tested.

17 minutes in, and the game had its first opportunity of the afternoon as midfielder Annie Highway had a shot from the edge of the box; however, her shot was blocked by the defender and the ball went past the post for a City corner.

Three minutes later, it was Highway again who stung the palms of the Sutton goalkeeper as she drove into the box and shot.

Shortly after, new signing Clara Zaffignani tried her luck from the edge of the box, but her effort didn’t have enough power to trouble the keeper.

City had two efforts just before the half-hour mark, first, a mix-up in the Sutton defence gifted a chance to Charlotte Poole, but the Royals’ keeper pulled off an outstanding save to deny City.

The Sutton goalkeeper was at it again, almost immediately, after the ball fell to full-back Bethan Marriot at the far post, but her effort was tipped over.

Winger Kaye Haggett, in the 36th minute, was the latest player to try and break down a stubborn Royals defence, but her effort from range didn’t have the dip to go into the net.

Two minutes later, City finally got the goal that their pressure and football deserved after a Highway cross at the back stick was headed home by skipper Jessica Fassnidge to score her first of the new campaign.

Just before the half-time whistle, Sutton had a shot from the left-hand side with a free kick, but it wasn’t troubling City keeper Jodie Whiteman.

After the break, in the 52nd minute, Worcester played some great football, leading to Evie Billingsley playing the ball to Poole on the left, who cut inside and had a shot that just went past the post.

Ten minutes later, Zaffignani had a shot from the edge of the box however, it was a comfortable save by the Sutton keeper.

Sutton were struggling to create any changes of note, that was until the 94th minute when a corner was played in, and a bullet header cannoned off the post. The game remained in City’s hands though as the hosts were rewarded with their first three points of the 2025/26 season.

Next up, we welcome Leafield Athletic to Sixways, next Sunday, 31st August, with a 14:00 kick-off.
