Wyn Davies Obit: The Footballer Who Could Fly
The London Mags are saddened to hear of the passing on Tuesday of our friend, Vice President and NUFC legend, Wyn Davies. The Club's first contact with Wyn came in 2004 with publication of Paul Joanou's book Shirt of Legend. Fundraising secretary, Jonathan Miller undertook a mission, asking all surviving No 9s to autograph the same copy which was raffled during 40th anniversary celebrations. His approach to Wyn began a long relationship.
Sadly, illness prevented Wyn from attending both 50th and 60th anniversary parties but he was immensely proud to be a Vice President and always sported his NUSC(L) club tie when attending events on Tyneside.
Over the years various delegations of members journey to Wyn’s adopted hometown of Bolton to be entertained with a myriad of stories and memories over fish and chips at Wyn’s favourite Chippy. On one trip, in 2001, we presented him with a bound ‘This is your life ’scrapbook, compiled by Roger Douglass (assisted by Jon Miller and Duncan James)
In 2022 we were back in Bolton again to present Wyn with a painting commissioned (at Jonathan’s suggestion)by the Supporters’ Club from North East artist Peter Endean to mark his 80th birthday,
Wyn was signed by Joe Harvey in 1966 after impressing in two feisty Easter encounters with promotion rivals Bolton Wanderers, He went on to make 216 appearances for the Toon, scoring53 goals and creating many more for his strike partner, Bryan (Pop) Robson. He was also a key member of the Fairs Cup winning team.
In 1971 Wyn was transferred to Manchester City and a year later, to Manchester United.
